Scan for Duplicate Photos — Free Windows Tool

Duplicate Photos PC finds every copy of an image on your disk—exact matches, burst frames, cropped versions, resaved messenger photos—and moves the extras to the Recycle Bin in one click. Free, portable, no account.

Why You Need to Scan for Duplicates

Years of phone backups, vacation folders, and messenger app saves pile up fast. A single photo might exist as five different files: the original, a resized version, a screenshot, an edited copy, a burst frame. Multiply that across thousands of photos and you're paying cloud storage fees for gigabytes of garbage.

A duplicate photo scan cuts through the mess without breaking anything. Everything deleted lands in the Windows Recycle Bin—you can undo it tomorrow if you change your mind. Nothing vanishes permanently until you empty the bin yourself.

Duplicate Photos PC does both kinds of scans: exact byte-for-byte matches (fastest) and visual similarity (catches the tricky ones—burst frames, slightly different crops, the same photo saved by three different apps).

Exact vs. Similar Scans

An 'Exact only' scan uses cryptographic hashing—if two files are byte-for-byte identical, they land in the same group. This is fast and safe: zero false positives. Use it if you just want to nuke obvious copies and don't care about burst frames.

A 'Similar + exact' scan adds perceptual hashing, which catches images that look the same but aren't identical bytes. Burst frames from your phone camera, the same landscape photo with a different crop, a picture your friend sent you via messenger (which got re-compressed), slightly edited versions—all land together. Slower on massive libraries, but if you've got ten years of phone photos, this is the mode that actually clears space.

You choose the mode before scanning starts. No switching mid-way, so think about what you're hunting for. Most people run 'Similar + exact' first, then 'Exact only' again later on new photos.

How to Scan for Duplicate Photos

  1. Download and unzip Go to duplicatephotospc.com, grab the Windows build, unzip it anywhere. No installer, no admin rights needed. Open the folder and run the app.
  2. Add your photo folders Click to add Pictures, Downloads, an external USB drive, a network share—any combination. Start with one folder if you're new to this.
  3. Pick your scan mode Choose 'Exact only' for speed (finds identical files only), or 'Similar + exact' to catch burst frames, edited versions, and resized copies. Similar mode is slower on huge libraries but worth it if you have years of phone backups.
  4. Scan Click the button. The app groups duplicates as it goes. A second scan on the same folder is nearly instant because results are cached.
  5. Review and delete Each group shows side-by-side preview with file size and resolution. The app auto-picks the sharpest copy, but you can override it. Click 'Move to Recycle Bin' and you're done.

Safety and Undo

Every file you delete goes to the Windows Recycle Bin, not into a digital shredder. You can restore anything with one right-click in the bin, or empty the bin later when you're confident. The app never hard-deletes anything.

The app is fully offline—no upload, no cloud sync, no telemetry. Every file it reads sits on your local disk. Your photo library never leaves your PC.

Before hitting 'Move to Recycle Bin', you review every group. The app auto-picks the highest-resolution or sharpest copy to keep, but you can manually choose which version to save if you prefer a different one.

Common Questions

Is it really free?

Yes. Free forever, MIT licensed, no watermark, no trial restrictions, no Pro tier. Download once and you own it.

Do I need to create an account?

No. The app opens straight to the main window. No sign-up, no login, no sync.

Will it find duplicates on Google Photos or iCloud?

No. It scans local folders on your PC—internal drives, external USB drives, mounted network shares. Cloud libraries that aren't mirrored to disk are out of scope. Download your photos first if you want to scan them.

What if I accidentally delete something?

It goes to the Windows Recycle Bin. Right-click the bin and restore it, or wait until you're sure before emptying the bin. The app doesn't touch the bin—that's a Windows action.

Does it work on Windows 11?

Yes. Windows 10 and 11, both 64-bit.

Do I need internet?

No. The app runs fully offline. Zero dependencies on external servers or cloud storage.
